Nacius Joseph was born in Petit Goave, Haiti in 1939. He began his artistic career working along side of Odilon Duperrier in Port-au-Prince. Pierre Monosiet discovered he woodwork sculpting skills. He was Haiti's first recognized wood sculptor. Profoundly involved in voodoo, Nacius draws his subject matter from his religious beliefs. In his book "Where Art is Joy", Selden Rodman referred to Nacius Joseph as the "Sculptor of Genius".
