This painting depicts the brave Haitian General Capois La Mort who courageously fought for the independence of Haiti and won it's freedom by defeating the French army led by the French General Napoléon Bonaparte, on January 1, 1804. Pierre Augustin has capture’s Capois La Mort during a fierce battle against the French army. The backdrop depicts the explosions and plumes of smoke form cannons, the weapon of the day. History that is obligatory true to a historian is always imaginative for an artist. Pierre Augustin has always been drawn to preserving the historical facts of Haitian history.
