Jacques Enguerrand Gourgue was born on August 6, 1930 in Port-au-Prince, Haiti. He began painting in 1946. Gourgue was one of the first artists to give shape to the most intangible of myths. The Museum of Modern Art in New York City owns one of his voodoo paintings “The Magic Table”, which he painted at age seventeen. In 1949, Jacques won a Bronze Medal at Bicentenary Expositions held in Mexico, Germany and France. With maturity, Gourgue presents us with his own world, mystical, but secret. He has exhibited in New York, Paris, Canada, Germany, Italy, Puerto Rico, Venezuela, Yugoslavia and Brazil. Gourgue is listed in Davenport’s Art Reference and Price Guide and his works are sold at Sotheby’s, Christie’s and Butterfield auction houses. Gourgue died in 1996.
