Frantz Louis Laratte was born on May 2, 1960 in Port-au-Prince, Haiti. He studied sculpture under his father Georges Laratte, one of Haiti’s foremost sculptors. Young Frantz began working with wood, and later became interested in the smooth rounded stones found at the bottom of rivers, which he used to create sculpture. Laratte believes that each stone houses a form created by nature and that he uses his skills to free the elemental spirits embodied within the raw material.
