Wilson Bigaud was born in Port-au-Prince, Haiti in 1931. At the age of 14 he was encouraged to paint by the great Haitian Master Hector Hyppolite while working as his assistant. He joined the Centre d’Art in 1946. Bigaud, who has little formal education, is considered one of the greatest natural talents in Haiti. His massive mural, “The Wedding Feast at Cana” located in Ste. Trinite Cathedral is a great testimony of his talent. His “Adam and Eve” is thought to be one of the finest Haitian primitive paintings. Bigaud suffered several mental breakdowns during the period 1957 to 1961. After recovery he retreated to family life and ceased painting. Bigaud’s works have achieved worldwide recognition. They are included in permanent collections at the Musee d'Art du College Saint Pierre in Port-au-Prince, the Davenport Museum of Art in Iowa, and the Museum of Modern Art in New York.
