Jean-Claude “Tiga” Garoute (December 9, 1935 – December 14, 2006) was a pioneering Haitian artist renowned for his contributions to painting and sculpture. Born in Jérémie, Garoute was a pivotal figure in the Haitian art scene, co-founding the influential ceramic art museum Poto-Mitan.

Along with Levoy Exil and Maud Guerdes Robard, Tiga established the Saint-Soleil post-naïve school of Haitian painting. This movement began when they provided drawing and painting materials to farmers in Soisson-La-Montagne, near Port-au-Prince. They nurtured a generation of artists, including Levoy Exil, Dieseul Paul, Prosper Pierre Louis, and Louisiane Saint Fleurant.

Known for his abstract style, Tiga’s artwork has been celebrated globally and exhibited extensively in Haiti, Canada, Europe, Japan, and the United States. His paintings often explore themes rooted in Haitian culture and spirituality, capturing the vibrant essence of his homeland.

Tiga’s contributions to Haitian art are documented in works such as Gérald Alexis’ “Peintres Haïtiens” and John Allen Franciscus’ "Haiti: Voodoo Kingdom to Modern Riviera," which feature illustrations of his distinctive paintings.
