Fritzner Alphonse born in Port-au-Prince in 1938, worked as a leather tanner until the age of 36. He was encouraged to paint by the legendary Haitian artist Calixte Henri. A repeated theme in his paintings is the female figure, especially Creole women, which he depicts in numerous variations. Alphonse's work has been exhibited throughout the Caribbean, as well as in Mexico, Europe, Japan, and many parts of the U.S.A.
