Franklin Latortue

Latortue, Franklin was born in November 12, 1942 in Port-au-Prince, Haiti. Older brother of well-known Philton Latortue. He attended both Casernes Dessalines Grade School and Toussaint L’Overture High School. He came to Centre d’Art in 1961. In 1965 he entered the Academie des Beaux Arts where he worked under Professor George Ramponeau and Montagutelli. In 1969 he left for New York and was in an exhibit sponsored by Columbia University. From 1969- 1974 most of his works were exhibited in the Leon Chalom and Fabian Galleries. Illustrations of his painting can be seen in John Allen Franciscus’ book, “Haiti Voodoo Kingdom To Modern Riviera”.

About the work

Franklin has successfully captured the vibrancy of colors of a typical Haitian market. The painting also captures a spectacular view of the surrounding landscape and village life. Women are portrayed in this market scene since in Haiti they are mainly responsible for selling the produce while the men engage in farming. The authenticity of this painting is fully guaranteed.
