About artist

Jean Robert Laratte

Jean Robert Laratte was born on March 8, 1963 in Port-au-Prince, Haiti. At the age of 18 years old he studied sculpture under his father Georges Laratte, one of Haiti’s foremost sculptors. Young Frantz began working with wood, and later became interested in the smooth rounded stones found at the bottom of rivers, which he used to create sculpture. Laratte believes that each stone houses a form created by nature and that he uses his skills to free the elemental spirits embodied within the raw material.
