Gesner Abelard was born on February 22, 1922 in Port-au-Prince, Haiti. He completed primary school at l’ecole Jean Marie Guillox. In 1948 he joined the Centre d’Art and worked under the supervision of Haitian Master Cedor. In 1949, he received a bronze medal at the international exhibition of Bicentenaire de Port-au-Prince. In 1950, he participated in the foundation of the Foyer des Arts Plastiques (FDAP), but he later returned to the Centre d’Art. His work has been featured in several group exhibits in Europe and the US. Many of his paintings have been sold at the Sotheby’s auction house. Gesner’s work is included in the permanent collections of the Musee d'Art Haitien du College Saint Pierre in Port-au-Prince, the Davenport Museum of Art in Iowa, the Milwaukee Museum of Art, and the Waterloo Museum of Art in Iowa.
