About artist

Josue Joseph

Josue Joseph born April 26, 1947 in Santiago, Cuba of Haitian parents. He came to Haiti in 1957, when his parents returned to settle Jacmel. In 1962, he began painting under the guidance of his uncle, Alexandre Gregoire, an established primitive artist. A rich painter, his meticulous brush gives life to legendary leaves and flowers, that makes certain pictures look like embroidery. His paintings are included in the permanent collections of the Waterloo Museum of Art in Iowa, United States. Illustrations of his painting can be seen in John Allen Franciscus’ book, “Haiti Voodoo Kingdom To Modern Riviera”.

About the work

Painting Description:

“ This painting depicts a country market with several peasants selling and bartering their fruits and vegetables. The painting also captures a spectacular view of the surrounding landscape. Joseph has successfully captured the vibrancy of colors that are typical of the Haitian marketplace. More women are portrayed in this market scene since in Haiti they are mainly responsible for selling the produce while the men engage in farming. ”
