Joel Gauthier was born in Port-au-Prince on June 6, 1955. He started painting at the age of 16 and his talent was immediately recognized by are lovers. His style can be easily identified by his use of delicate textures, heavy impasto, and strong flat colors. These features are all indicative of the older school. He studied design under Emmanuel Pierre-Charles and David Rouzier. Gauthier later tuned to a more decorative style of painting as seen in his popularization of safari wildlife. His work has been exhibited in many galleries, both in Haiti and abroad.
