Voodoo Drum
Jacques Dorcè ”Voodoo Drum”
Painting Description:
“Dorce depicts the initial rituals of a voodoo ceremony. In the mountains of Haiti, a ceremony calling the Loas is being performed around a sacred drum. This particular drum is the Assotor drum, the largest and most sacred of all Voodoo drums. Jacques has captured the beat of this drum, the central focus of this scene, through the dancing positions of the two Mambos dressed in red. The Hougan, who craves spiritual power, is wearing a turban around his head with an eye at the center.”
