About artist

Kesnel Franklin

Kesnel Franklin was born in Au Cayes, Haiti on June 24, 1945. He began painting at an early age and became fascinated with the voodoo religion. His popularity as a painter expanded after studying at the Academie des Beaux-Arts under Geo Remponeau and Petion Savain. His works were prominently featured in many exhibitions both in Haiti and abroad. His voodoo scenes have given collectors a birds eye view of the voodoo religion. He is listed in Eva Pataki's book, "Art in Kitsch"and John Allen Franciscus’ book, “Haiti Voodoo Kingdom To Modern Riviera”. Kesnel's works are also included in the permanent collections of the Musee d'Art Haitien du College Saint Pierre in Port-au-Prince, and the Waterloo Museum of Art in Iowa. Kesnel died a violent death in Haiti during the mid 70's.

About the work

Painting Description:

“This beautiful piece is amongst Prosper G. Lafontant finest works. It depicts a beautiful maiden who fell into a trance during a voodoo ritual to drive away the evil spirit, which made her ill, from her body. As the evil spirit is driven from her body, she collapses into a trance like state. Lafontant uses this state to capture feminine beauty as well as vulnerability. This painting is signed and dated 1966 on the top right corner. It is handsomely framed in a dark wood finish. This painting is guaranteed to be original work of the artist.”
