Self-taught Haitian painter Pierre-Louis Riché was born in Cap Haitian on October 19, 1954. Riché began his artistic journey in his twenties, honing his craft in the atelier of the North's old master, Philome Obin. For nearly two decades, he dedicated himself to painting historical subjects, capturing Haiti's rich cultural and historical tapestry.

However, Riché eventually shifted his focus to his preferred subject: obese people. His artwork, characterized by its large, exaggerated volumes, resembles the style of Colombian figurative artist Fernando Botero. This signature style, also known as "Boterismo," is used by Riché to depict people and figures exaggeratedly, often serving as a medium for political criticism or humor, depending on the piece. Despite the similarities, Riché asserts that he has never seen a painting by Botero, a claim he maintains even when accused of imitation.

Riché's work is distinguished by its fine execution and rich coloration, making it a vibrant and unique contribution to Haitian art. His pieces reflect his technical prowess and his ability to infuse humor and critique into his art, creating a distinct and impactful body of work.
