Petion Savain Born in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, on February 15, 1906. Considered one of the founding fathers of Haitian painting, he was the first Haitian painter to gain recognition for his work. He was awarded medals at the Gallery of Science and Art in 1939, five years before the opening of the Centre d'Art. Savain studied at the Haitian School of Agronomy and also earned a law degree. He studied at the Art Student's League in New York in 1941. Savain is best described as a lawyer, painter, author and teacher of the arts. He studied and mastered mural and fresco techniques, and tempera. His works have been exhibited in Washington D.C, Chicago, San Francisco, Florida and in Europe. Savain died in 1975 but his legacy continues through one of his finest students, Jean Richard Coachy. Savain’s paintings are sold at all the major auction houses.
